Advising

Bo Sun talking to a student

We understand that the universe of OSU courses can be overwhelming and sometimes confusing. How do you select the right ones for your degree and your career? Your physics advisor is there to help navigate these challenges and ensure that you are connected to the resources our department and the university offer to help you make the most of your time in college.

Appointments are over Zoom, but face-to-face meetings are available. If you prefer to meet in person, schedule an appointment and then send an email to your advisor with your meeting request.

For brief questions, or if you have trouble making an appointment, you can contact both of us by emailing [email protected].

Course registration

Each spring all physics majors must meet with their advisor before registering, to discuss which courses to take. First year and new transfer students meet every term.

These meetings are to help you make acceptable progress toward completing your degree and to see that you don't overlook any departmental or university requirements. We make sure that your curriculum planner in MyDegrees is up to date with the courses that you need to take for the following year.

Advising appointments are generally available throughout the term. And while certain meetings are required, you can always request a meeting for any academic-related questions or concerns.

Your advisor must approve all variations from the required departmental curricula. College or university requirements can be changed only through academic petitions to the College of Science or the Registrar's Office respectively.

Newly accepted to physics?

Before starting classes at Oregon State you will have to participate in New Student Onboarding. During these sessions you will meet with an advisor to discuss your program for the next term. The most important issue to resolve is the mathematics course appropriate for you to begin at OSU. Not all information might be available to the advisor, so having AP exam results and transfer course lists at your advising session may be helpful. Feel free to contact the head advisor ahead of time with all questions you might have at ([email protected]).

Articulations

Articulation (transfer) of courses that have already been evaluated by the registrar should occur automatically, as long as you have submitted a transcript from the school at which you took the course. To see which courses are covered, check out the Articulation tables on the registrar's website. This also covers AP and IB credits.

To request evaluation of a new course, you need to contact the relevant department at OSU. To have physics courses evaluated, use the link below.
