Professor Jim Gates

The College of Science is delighted to welcome legendary theoretical physicist Dr. Jim Gates, a University System Regents Professor and John S. Toll Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland, who received the National Medal of Science in 2013 for his groundbreaking research in string and particle theory. A passionate advocate of diversity in science and mathematics education, Gates frequently appears on PBS’s NOVA, the American science documentary television series, where he elevates the public’s awareness and understanding of theoretical physics. In his lecture, Gates will illuminate how fostering racial diversity and closing the equity gap in STEM fields are essential both for scientific excellence and continuing progress in society.
