The 2017 Nobel prize in Physics was awarded to Barry Barish, Kip Thorne, and Rainer Weiss for the discovery of gravitational waves. We will review the history of gravitational waves search and the incredible technical challenges of detecting a movement of 0.002 fm in a 4 km interferometer arm. Finally, we will address the physical consequences of detecting gravitational waves from cosmic collisions, especially when accompanied by electromagnetic waves.
