In all classes, there comes a moment when an instructor poses a question to students. In a lecture, typically the instructor invites only one or a couple of students to offer an answer. With more active pedagogies, every student is expected to respond. These questions can take many different forms (verbal, written, open-ended, multiple choice, conceptual, calculational, etc) all of which impact how they support learning. In this workshop, we’ll discuss what makes a good in-class question. Participants will compare & contrast several example questions and discuss their affordances and drawbacks. This workshop is the first of a three-part series this academic year about physics pedagogies.
