We think of our brains as accurate processors of information, but the reality is that we have “blind spots.” Implicit bias is an area of social psychology that looks at automatic mental shortcuts/heuristics and their impact on the accuracy of our cognition—their tendency to create blind spots. Our cognitive shortcuts are non-conscious and thus invisible to us—the challenge is learning to recognize the risk of these inaccuracies and develop mitigating strategies. And of course these heuristics don’t develop in a vacuum—they rely on a collection of “data” that our brains collect and categorize indiscriminately, outside our conscious awareness.
