This year, particle physicists are actively analyzing the record breaking dataset of 13 TeV collisions from the LHC at CERN. Our discovery of the Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector was the outstanding success of the 8 TeV LHC, but what comes next? With the Standard Model complete the discovery of new physics could be just beginning. In this talk I will describe the tools and motivation for our search for new particles and new physics. I will discuss recent searches for new physics and work on critical upgrades of the ATLAS detector as we prepare for the future.
