The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to pioneering work in artificial intelligence came as a surprise to many. However, the early development of artificial intelligence has deep roots in biophysics and statical mechanics. In this talk, I will introduce the early works by the Nobel Laureates Dr. John J. Hopfield, and Dr. Geoffery Hinton, specifically the Hopfield model and the Boltzmann machine, which were part of the PH591 course we used to offer.
