As scientists, we pride ourselves as being logical, rational and data-driven individuals. However, both scientists and non-scientists are prone to illogical decision making due to interference from implicit bias. Implicit biases are the subconscious beliefs and attitudes that each of us hold. These biases can be different from our explicit (conscious) attitudes and hence lead to contradictory and unanticipated behaviors. In this talk, we will cover the basics of implicit bias, explore case studies of how bias has impacted organizations and discuss strategies to prevent its interference in future decision making.
