Science and Scientists as Tropes
Science and Scientists as Tropes
Abstract: Most Americans cannot name a living scientist and do not personally know a scientist. Many Americans feel alienated from the scientific process, and think science is incomprehensible. It doesn't help that anti-science politicians often try to represent basic research and laboratory work as nonsense. Unfortunately, popular entertainment influences the image of scientists and perpetuates myths about a life in science. Many Americans get their impressions of scientific topics, scientists, and what scientists do from television, movies, cartoons, comic books, and Science Fiction. Television and movies increasingly devalue science, reason, and critical thinking portraying them as tools unsuitable for understanding our world in a new age of credulity and relativism. But Hollywood is about entertainment and has no responsibility to portray science or scientists plausibly. Yet when science is portrayed well and motivated by realistic goals and interests, everyone wins.
