Since this is the first quarter of grad school - a discussion of note taking expectations would be appropriate. I think every student should be bringing a notebook to class and taking notes in parallel to the lecture notes. To emphasize this, I think one out of three classes could be given without handing out lecture notes.  Since this is the first quarter of grad school - a discussion of note taking expectations would be appropriate.  +===Student suggestions===
+Most students felt like homework assignments were too time consuming. I agree that they can be shortened a little bit to emphasize understanding over hours-worked.
 +
+Some homework questions were unclear. There were definitely some cases where I had to clarify a homework question mid-week, and this should be avoided.
 +
+A good idea for grading during the quarter: Give a 5-10 minute quiz on Monday, which probes the understanding of a homework problem from the previous Friday. The grading of these problems would be fast, and more useful for checking student understanding. This would also relieve the heavy grading load of the class.
