§ 11:  Working with Multiple Computers

It is possible that you already have an account on another Unix machine, for example at a central computing site or on a research machine. If you do not have one, and you are in the Physics Department, you should establish a University Computing Services account now. It is expected that you will use the ucs account for your mail and backup.

In order to use all of your accounts effectively, it is useful to know how to access one machine from another and how to transfer files between them. There are many ways to access one machine from another (the Webterm program in this tutorial is one of them). One of the most universal ways to access another computer is with the telnet command. One of the most universal ways to transfer files to another computer is with the file transfer protocol command ftp (another is with diskettes).

The following subjects are presented in this tutorial. See "A Scientist's Guide to Workstations" for more information on computer-computer interactions.

  1. The telnet Command
  2. The rlogin and rloginX Commands
  3. Using ftp
    1. Help and Navigation
    2. Transfering Individual Files
    3. Transfering Multiple Files
    4. Transfering Large File Structures
    5. Taring and compressing
    6. Transferring and Restoring
