§ 7.C:  Review Quiz, Editors

Now that you know everything about editors ("who, me?"), you are ready to edit your home page for the World Wide Web. Consider this our gift to you (we assume you are one of those people who have been wanting to do this, but just haven't gotten a round to it).

In the directory public-html there is a sample home page named sample-page.html. Open it now with your favorite editor and look at it. This file is written in the HyperText Markup Language, html. This is the language for World Wide Web documents, and is rather easy to figure out.

Because you are probably not expert with html (and with editing), it is likely for you to really mess this document up. So start by making a backup copy of it and then editing the backup:

This means you should be editing index.html, with the original sample-page.html back in a safe place.

The sample file has been set up to be easy to change:

  1. Replace "NAME" with your name.
  2. Replace the phone numbers with your phone numbers.
  3. Replace the addresses with your addresses.
  4. Read the html instructions.
  5. Delete the html instructions.
  6. Fill in schedule, hobbies and current projects.
  7. Personalize as desired.

In the next section, Accessing Information on the Internet, you will have the opportunity to see your Web page on the World Wide Web. You will be told when it is time to politely ask your Systems Administrator to link your home page to your Department's home page. Remember, you can always change your home page, it's your's.
