Previously computational-science educators were content for undergraduates to view scientific computation as ``black boxes'' and to wait for graduate school to teach what is inside the box.  Science and engineering's increasing reliance on high-performance computers makes this less true today and in the future. This new degree will advance the integration of high performance computation and communication into undergraduate education, and will help motivate students for the serious commitment needed for interdisciplinary work.
