After the sun's radiation, oceans play the next most important role in Earth's climate. We detail three of the most important ways the oceans influence climate. In doing so we highlight some of the theoretical and computational strategies used to study the largest fluid mechanics problem on our planet. We will conclude with a brief description of, and an invitation to, a new American Physical Society topical group on Climate.
