Tidally revitalized debris disks could explain the puzzling detection of gamma-rays coincident with the LIGO discovery of gravitational waves. The Lazzati group performs computer simulations of long-duration gamma-ray bursts, like the one shown in the picture, and of short duration bursts, a candidate source for the radiation detected by the Fermi experiment at the same time at which LIGO discovered gravitational waves from the merger of two black holes.
