Congratulations to Lee Aspitarte, 2015 recipient of the Ben and Elaine Whiteley Materials Research Fellowship Lee Aspitarte is a fourth year PhD student working with Prof. Ethan Minot, and recipient of this year’s Whiteley Materials Research Fellowship. He is studying photocurrent generation in photodiodes fabricated from single carbon nanotubes (CNTs). CNTs are exciting candidates for next generation solar technology because they undergo Multiple Electron-hole pair Generation (MEG), where carriers excited by a photon with an energy of more than twice the band gap can decay by exciting additional electron-hole pairs. By utilizing MEG, CNT based solar technology could exceed the theoretical limit on solar power conversion efficiency for silicon based technology, 29%. The research funded by this fellowship will study MEG in CNT photodiodes by manipulating the dielectric environment surrounding the CNT, affecting the electron-electron scattering processes that lead to MEG. The knowledge gained from this study could directly impact design considerations for next-generation high-efficiency MEG based solar cells. Mr. Aspitarte received the Peter Fontana Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in 2012 and has already co-authored two papers on his research at Oregon State. The Ben and Elaine Whiteley Endowment for Materials Research, established in 2007, provides support for materials research in the College of Science. In particular, it provides fellowship support for students to work full time during the Summer in a research laboratory, working on materials research related topics.

This spring term, there will be 2 different styles of Ph211 offered. One will be the traditional course with 3 hours of lecture (MWF) and a 3 hour lab. The other course will minimize lecture and incorporate a studio session, and consist of 2 hours of lecture (TR), a 2 hour studio, and a 2 hour lab. Lecture sections of both course styles will cap at 200 students, and the labs for both courses are similar (though longer for the traditional course). The studio sections will utilize interactive, collaboratively-based instructional methods in classes of up to 72 students. As student attention is drawn to analyzing different physical situations, a teacher and assistants circulate around the room and engage students in Socratic dialogs. The reduced lecture time will be primarily for motivation, to provide an overview of topics, and to see applications of the methods developed in the studio session. When you register, the lecture that meets 3 times a week must be matched with a 3 hour lab, it should work that you have to register for both. If you choose the course with the studio section you register for the tues/thurs lecture, one studio section and one of the 2 hour labs. The 221 recitation is an additional hour available for all students as a separate registration.

Some degree programs (majors and minors) at Oregon State University will be eliminated as a result of mandatory budget cuts. The MS program in Applied Physics is one of the programs. Students who currently have declared this major will be permitted to complete their degree. These students should continue to work with the Head Graduate Adviser to make sure that their program fulfills all degree requirements. New students will not be admitted into the Applied Physics program. This implies that we cannot accept new students into the Applied Physics track of our Professional Science Masters Program.

Some degree programs (majors and minors) at Oregon State University will be eliminated as a result of mandatory budget cuts. Engineering Physics is one of the programs. Students who currently have declared this major, either at Oregon State University or at a Community College, will be permitted to complete their degree. These students should continue to work with the Head Adviser in Engineering Physics to make sure that their program fulfills all degree requirements. New majors will not be admitted into the Engineering Physics program.

To all students who need to take PH 211 and cannot get in: as you have noticed the course is full, because we are out of laboratory space. This also happened in the last few years, and we were able to resolve most problems by the end of the first week of classes, but this year the number of students who need to get in is larger than ever. We have already warned advisers about the problem in Fall term. We do not have the resources (equipment, personnel) and space to add duplicate laboratory sessions. Because of the larger number of students involved, this year we do not give any overrides. Your options are: Keep watching for openings. Students do drop their registration, and openings do come up. Traditionally, and in particular in the first week of classes, a number of students will drop the course. This also means that if you try to change your registration, you will probably not be able to get back in! Take PH 211 in Summer, and continue the normal sequence in Fall. This year it is an eight week course, and we will have sufficient space. Take PH 211 in Fall, and continue this trailer sequence. Pre-engineering students will still be able to fulfill their physics requirements for entry into pro-school this way in a timely fashion. We apologize for not having a more satisfactory answer. Unfortunately, this is not a case with an easy solution.
