2008-Jul-31Congratulations to Prof. Corinne Manogue, who is this year's recipient of the university-wide Richard M. Bressler Senior Faculty Teaching Award, which rewards faculty who have demonstrated a major commitment to undergraduate instruction at OSU over an extended period of time. Corinne will receive the award at a special event on September 17 and will also be recognized at the University Day celebrations on September 18.
2008-Jul-31Congratulations to Howard Hui, undergraduate student in Physics, who is one of five summer interns associated with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center who have been selected as a "John Mather Nobel Scholar 2008" The funding for this scholarship originates from the John and Jane Mather Foundation for Science and the Arts.

2008-Mar-24Congratulations to Prof. Corinne Manogue, who was selected as the 2008 winner of the American Association of Physics Teachers' Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching Award. This Award recognizes outstanding achievements by an AAPT member in undergraduate physics teaching, in particular her significant work in the highly-regarded Paradigms Program. 2008-Mar-17The College of Science is pleased to announce the reception of an very generous gift from Dr. Joan Suit towards constructing and outfitting a new class room in Weniger Hall, dedicated to education in our lower division service courses. This gift significantly extends funds for the project, and brings the project closer to reality.

2008-Feb-05The College of Science is pleased to announce the reception of an extremely generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Greg Serrurier towards constructing and outfitting a new class room in Weniger Hall, dedicated to education in our lower division service courses. The class room will be built following the SCALE-UP model. This gift will help us to extend our successful Paradigms in Physics Program to lower division education.
2008-Feb-04The Physics Department has received a generous gift of computing equipment from the HP Employee Product Gift Giving Program to support our radio telescope project. This gift will help to move the project forward rapidly and to enable our students to study the universe even in our cloudy environment.
2007-Dec-06The College of Science is pleased to announce the inception of the Ben and Elaine Whiteley Endowed Fund in Materials Research, recently established by long-time friends, donors, and volunteers, Ben and Elaine Whiteley. Elaine's father was Dr. Edwin Yunker. Professor Yunker was a member of the OSU physics faculty from 1925 to 1968 and was department chair from 1949 to 1966. The Yunker lecture was established in his honor. Ben and Elaine live in Portland, and are delighted to have made this contribution in support of the materials science program, which has also been counted toward the challenge made by the Valley Foundation for the College of Science to raise $15 million in program support.

2007-Nov-16Professor Viktor Podolskiy and his group have designed optical metamaterials capable of negative refraction. Experimental verification by researchers at Princeton has led to a joint paper in Nature Materials. See the OSU Media Release .

2007-May-09We are very happy to welcome Dr. Dedra Demaree as a new faculty member in the Department of Physics. Dedra will start her appointment on September 16, 2007. The focus of her work at OSU will be the investigation and incorporation of methods to improve education in our large enrollment service courses.

2006-Oct-10Note to students and advisors. Our course sequence for Ph211-2-3 has changed slightly. Ph 211 still covers mechanics. Ph 212 covers rotational motion, waves, optics. Ph213 covers electricity and magnetism. See here for sample curricula for Ph 211 Ph 212 Ph 213 For transfer students there are no consequences if the whole sequence is transfered, or if only ph211 is transfered.
